Why we exist

Leon Stuparich, founder of Wildrness
"Freelancing can be isolating, but it is a powerful way to live a creative life. Confidence in who you are and what you bring changes everything."

I got into this industry the old way. As a camera assistant I was mentored by a DOP. When I started edit assisting on Big Brother, back in series four, I spent my time going round the edit suites, shadowing editors and getting to know people. Producers noticed, and they started feeding me work. That's how most of us got started: someone vouched for us.

Twenty-five years later, that route is harder to find. More work is remote, the places where people used to meet and learn are disappearing, and the work itself is moving from broadcast into podcasting, branded content and YouTube. Experienced people are struggling to find work, while more and more creators and brands need exactly the skills they have.

When I went looking for work outside TV myself, my credits counted for very little and nobody could tell me what a portfolio should look like. Hirers had the opposite problem: hundreds of applications and no easy way to know who was right.

Wildrness is my answer to both. We help hirers find people they can trust, and help experienced creative professionals be seen for who they are and how they work. The measure is simple: do they want to work together again?
